A while back, when I realized that writing was something I wanted to take seriously, I never really dreamed of making it big, or gracing the best seller lists, or anything like that. Truthfully, all I really wanted to do was entertain people in my own little way. If that meant some poor shmuck got to pass a few hours with a book I write, so be it. That, to me, was an honor in and of itself.
I’m perfectly okay with that.
I also made a promise to myself. I promised that if I got to a point where I was at least somewhat successful that I’d give back. I’m going to make good on that. Here’s how:
I’m going to donate 20% of any royalties I receive to the National Park Foundation. I’m something of an amateur outdoorsman and one of my fondest memories is when I used to go camping with the family at Uwharrie National Forest. I’d like to do my part to keep that around for other families, kids, and the like. As I said, I don’t expect to top any bestseller lists, so it may not be a whole lot of money, but the gesture is there.
The other thing I’m going to do is provide free e-book versions of anything I write to active duty military. Be it a short story, a novel, what have you, all it takes is an email. If I can provide a little bit of distraction to someone far from home or missing their family, then I’m all for doing just that.
There you have it. This is my little way of giving back.
