A lot of times, when I’m writing, I like to put together a playlist. I do them for characters, scenes that play out in my head, the setting, and so on and so forth. It’s one of those things that helps me think. Just for fun, I think I’ll post a few of them, probably not in any particular order.
This one is the first, Jonah’s. Given that Jonah’s something of a boozer, a con, and an all around self-absorbed prick, I wanted the music to reflect that. On the same note, he’s also a decent guy under it all, so I wanted the music to reflect that, too.
#1 – Alice in Chains – Down in a Hole (Unplugged)
A song that, at least for me, speaks a lot about addiction. That, and Alice in Chains is my favorite band so it only seems to make sense.
#2 – Foo Fighters – The Pretender
If there was ever a walking case of “in denial”, it’d be Jonah.
#3- Tom Waits – Heart Attack and Vine
Hero lost in a downward spiral of self destruction? Check.
#4- Lynard Skynard – Simple Man
There’s a lot going on in this song, as it relates to Jonah. On the one hand, his actual mother left when he was a kid. On the other, the only mother figure he ever had had a conversation very similar to this one, but it ended on a more “my boot, your ass” note.
#5 – Garth Brooks – Friends in Low Places
This one pretty much speaks for itself.
